Film Voting Changes – October 2019

The following changes are now in effect for Film Voting:

• Multi-night films are now banned for the standard duration, multiplied by the number of films it lasts for. This is capped at the 5x multiplier. Using 60 days as the standard, this works out to:

► 2-film multi-night = 120 day ban
► 3-film multi-night = 180 day ban
► 4-film multi-night = 240 day ban
► 5-film multi-night = 300 day ban

• Films that came in second-place on voting the night before start off on the next voting day with 1 vote carried across.

The following changes will be implemented in the near future:

• ‘Choose Random Film’ and ‘Choose Random Voted Film’ at the top of the movie voting list. These options will allow you to choose a completely random film to vote towards, or choose a random film from films that already have a vote towards them. Have fun with feeling lucky!

• Ability to change your vote if you are logged in. This will go through a trial phase.

Site Updates – September 2019

The site has been updated with the following features:

• Updates to the server now allow for streams to be distributed at different quality levels. The stream will now adapt to your internet conditions and give the smoothest playback possible.

• With the above change, streams will now be broadcast at higher bitrates that won’t affect users with lower download speeds.

• Website is now fully supporting (and forcing) HTTPS for security and a better user experience.

• Javascript fixed on the Film Voting page to fix the search box and new/multi/banned film filters.

2018 Site Upgrade – All the details

After quite some time and work, We’ve finally been able to upgrade the site with a proper rehaul!

Film Voting

The biggest change is the new film voting system. It’s been moved off from Google Forms and onto the site itself with everything managed by databases on the back-end.

Each film is laid out with the title, description, and poster for you to easily see your options. If you want to check information like the cast, year it released etc., just click the More Info button to go to that film’s IMDB page.

You’ll notice there’s also a search box at the top too, which searches through the titles of the whole list and shows just those results. Normally the results will show in alphabetical order (with new films immediately at the top), so searching is super-easy to find what you really want to see.

You can also use special search terms to view only view newly added films (NEW), multi-night films (MULTI), and any that are currently banned (BANNED).

Down all the way at the bottom is the Film Suggestion form, where you can submit film suggestions that aren’t on the list. I check this often, so suggest as many as you want!

When film voting is open, you can see the current voted films right at the top! If you haven’t voted yet, you can choose one of the current voted films to help it win. Check out that sweet doughnut graph at the side too!

Stream Pages

Every stream page now supports both HLS playback and MPEG-DASH playback! Both formats are HTML5, so each will work in a variety of browsers and mobile devices.

You can find a new settings panel in the navbar on each stream page. Here you can change the video format, toggle the chat box (visible by default), or turn the stream full-screen (disabled by default). Unlike before, you won’t have to leave the page for these!

Try out fullscreen mode with the chat hidden, it’s like you’re in a real comfy theatre.

E3 2018

Huh? What’s this? I guess you’ll have to wait and see…

Introducing Comfy-tan!

After many suggestions from Steam group users earlier on in the year, I’ve been working on the basic ideal design and look for our new mascot for the stream, Comfy-tan. Inspiration was taken from the following characters:

  • Body shape and size: Mako Reizei (Girls und Panzer)
  • Face shape and style: Yui Hirasawa (K-On!)
  • Hair: Akiyama Yukari (Girls und Panzer) with a ponytail
  • Eyes: Tooka Takanashi (Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai)
  • Hairclip: Animal Crossing

With these in mind, I commissioned an artist to draw the visual appearance of her as a character sheet. The person I chose was Zero, who I befriended during E3 2016. You can see the progress pictures below:

What a proper character sheet now, I’ve planned to make multiple openings/endings and visual elements using Comfy-tan in them. Instead of having a person draw each separate thing needed, I decided that a 3D model would be the best approach as I have experience in 3D animation in Autodesk Maya. After seeing some previous impressive work, I commissioned Poribo to make an awesome 3D model:

I hope you’ll look forward to more cute renders and content with the best waifu on the internet! If you’re attending ComfyMeet at AX in 2017, you’ll be able to win exclusive Comfy-tan merch, including a plushie and a lewd dakimakura.

Site Progress: Features I’m working on and what’s to come

With 2017 on the horizon, I wanted to do a small blog post about features I’m currently looking at implementing next on the stream throughout the next few months. They’re on the upcoming features page already, but I wanted to go into a bit more detail about some here.

User account system for voting and chat

I’m planning on implementing PHP into the pages to work with a simple members system, where you’ll be able to change your image and username at the very basics. A new chat system will also be introduced to replace Chatango with less features to keep it simpler. No fancy fonts or colours, just keeping it nice and clean looking. The members system will tie into this, so you’ll have to log in with your account to use the chat with your name or you’ll strictly be named Anon.

Doing this will require some handiwork with Apache and node.js to get both working alongside each other, and then building the chat interface up using socket.io. The PHP members system is essentially done, I just need to add more into it to work alongside the site.

Upgrade film voting and move off Google Forms

This’ll come following the above work. With the site working with PHP, I’ll be able to create a new way of voting for films instead of staying tied to Google services, and show previews of the poster and description for each film. Of course, you’ll need a login to place a vote, so this’ll solve the problem of multiple votes too.

HTML5 video, leading to mobile support

Complicated! But still working on understanding it. I have to change the nginx-rtmp configuration to switch to HLS and MPEG-DASH output instead of the default RTMP/FLV setup that uses Flash, and move the video player from JWPlayer over to video.js. Unfortunately I need some time to do this, and that time means the stream has to be offline…

ComfyMeet 2017 merchandise

I’m bringing a bunch of cool merch out soon, including MAGA caps and keychains! A number of exclusive items will be made for ComfyMeet 2017, like a Comfy-tan Plush and a Dakimakura. Previews coming soon after Comfy-tan is revealed!
